Something For Your Spirit
Elder Thomas W. Burgess
In the 60's, R&B singer Mary Wells had a hit song written by Smokey Robinson called "My Guy". One of the lyric lines at the end of the song said...There's not a man today who can take me away from "MY GUY". No strong rap from some smooth talker, no muscle bound man could take my hand from my guy. No separation would be possible, from her guy. That was her love song to him, a confident song about her solely being dedicated and belonging to her guy.
Separation is painful in relationships but more so with bad things especially when you have enjoyed and grown dependent on what is no good for you. Ask someone dependent on drugs, liquor, tobacco, gambling, women or men...name an addiction and ask the one hooked on it about separation from it, what we call withdrawal. It will bring tears to your eyes listening to them talk about the pain they experience.
The symptons of withdrawal...the shakes, serious mood swings, loss of appetite and a feeling of lonliness because those addicted have been tricked into believing they can't function without having whatever it is they crave.
No one starts out being addicted, it is a lie of satan making thngs we know we don't need so appealing. Let's be real, being involved in sin and sinful activity is enjoyable...or so we are led to believe. The reality is it is not. It's a vice and that vice becomes tighter and tighter in our lives until what we become addicted to becomes our god, the thing we have worship instead of "The GOD" we know we should want worship. In this current political climate, friendships have been separated because of intolerance toward one another over a politician and that is crazy. Yet it is happening and it is happening to Church folks.
Then one day we realize I can't do this anymore, by this time we are now a shell of who we were but it is too late, we are hooked. Hurting physicall and mentally. What's worse is our Spirit is in a state of chaos because satan has told us GOD will never forgive what we have done. Has anyone ever been there?
Don't raise your hand, you won't have to...you already know what I am talking about because you might be in this state now. But there is hope, there is always hope for the saved in Christ. Paul lets us know that in his Roman Epistle.
No matter how we treat God, He will not abandon us the way we do each other. In my life it was Chapter 8 of Romans verses 38-39 that gave me hope. Paul states...For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come. (39)...Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
God loves you, no matter what you have done... He is waiting for you. Like the prodigal son, when you come to yourself, rest assured you can always go back to your father. He will be waiting for you and will gently whisper in your ear what He gave Paul to remind us of in Romans 8:1...There is now no comdenation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit.
God Bless You
